The compact MPV market has hardly any competition. The Ertiga from Maruti remains to be without much competition till a really competitive MPV is launched by a rival.
General Motors has come out with a new MPV, the Chevrolet Spin MPV, in the international markets. It has been running successfully in Brazil since June 2012 and it may take a few more months to start off its maiden drive in India. It may see an Indian launch in 2015.
Chevrolet Spin is larger in size and has a seating capacity of either 7 or 5 adults. The Spin has a large hexagonal grill at the front, large side sweeping headlamps, and a front bumper with integrated fog lamps. The other features include sporty roof rails, vertical rear windshield, rear tail lamps cluster sweeping to the sides, and a large rear boot door with a relatively small rear bumper. The high roofline means there is more space inside the cabin. The Chevrolet Spin rides on 15” alloy wheels.
The five seater variant (LT) will have features like air conditioning system with heater, anti-lock braking system, electronic brake force distribution, dual airbags, power steering, height adjustable driver’s seat and high quality fabric upholstery. Apart from these features, the high end seven seater (LTZ) has an additional third row for the passengers, parking sensors, controls mounted on the steering wheel, a radio with a CD player, MP3 and Bluetooth capability, roof racks and an on-board computer. Some standard features include manual air condition, power windows, central locking, tilt adjust steering, split seats at rear, keyless entry, dual SRS airbags, ABS and EBD which is standard even on the base variants. The seats can be reclined to accommodate more luggages.
The new Chevrolet Spin would come in two variants which can accommodate either five or seven adults. Both the variants will have a 1.8 litre four cylinder economical Flex engine that generates 108 bhp of power for petrol and 106 bhp of power when run on diesel. The engine is further put up with two transmission types, one being a five speed manual transmission and the other being a six speed automatic transmission. The seven-seater Spin will have a boot capacity of 162 litres and this will be increased to 710 litres in the five seater model.
In the Indian market, the Spin MPV will rival the likes of Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Nissan Evalia and the Honda Mobilio.
The new Chevrolet Spin MPV is expected to be priced in the Rs. 8 lakhs to Rs. 10 lakhs range. Moreover Chevrolet will have to come up with a diesel engine to stay in the Indian markets. Currently the Spin is only launched with a petrol engine.
